Week 13 old
Week 13: your baby is wrapping up month 3 with more smiles, longer awake stretches, and (often) longer nights. Here's what's typical and what to watch for.
In short
At 13 weeks, most babies take 4-6 oz per feeding about every 3-4 hours and sleep around 14-16 hours total, often with a longer stretch at night.
🍼 Feeding
Roughly 4-6 oz of formula about every 3-4 hours (around 24-32 oz per day), or breastfeeding on demand about every 3-4 hours, often 6-8 times in 24 hours. Solids are not recommended yet — wait until close to 6 months.
😴 Sleep
About 14-16 hours total: roughly 9-11 hours overnight (often with one longer stretch) plus 3-4 daytime naps. Wake windows are typically around 75-120 minutes. Always place baby on their back, alone, on a firm flat surface with no pillows, blankets, or bumpers.
What's happening this week
- •Around this age, many babies hold their head fairly steady and may push up on their forearms during tummy time.
- •Lots of babies this age are batting at dangling toys and bringing their hands together at the middle of their body.
- •Many 3-month-olds 'talk back' with coos and gurgles, and some are starting to laugh.
- •Social smiles are usually well established by now, and your baby may light up when they see you.
Milestones to keep in mind
- ✓By the 2-month checkup, the CDC looks for a social smile and brief self-calming; if your baby isn't smiling at people yet, mention it to your pediatrician.
- ✓Heading toward the 4-month checkpoint, many babies hold their head steady, coo, and follow objects across the midline — these emerge over a range of weeks, not on a fixed day.
- ✓There's no official 13-week milestone; think in terms of 'around 3-4 months' rather than this exact week.

💡 Tip for this week
If naps are getting short and fussy, try shortening the awake time before the next nap — an overtired 3-month-old often fights sleep harder, not less.
⚠️ When to call your pediatrician
Call your pediatrician for a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher in a baby this young, fewer than 5-6 wet diapers a day, poor feeding or no weight gain, unusual floppiness or stiffness, no social smiling, or eyes that consistently don't follow you or seem to cross all the time.
Frequently asked
How much should a 13-week-old eat?
Most babies this age take about 4-6 oz per feeding every 3-4 hours, totaling roughly 24-32 oz of formula a day, or nurse on demand about 6-8 times in 24 hours.
Can a 3-month-old sleep through the night?
Some babies start sleeping a longer 6-8 hour stretch around this age, but many still wake to feed overnight — both are completely normal. Always put your baby down on their back in a bare crib.
Is it normal for my 13-week-old to not roll over yet?
Yes. Rolling typically emerges around 4-6 months over a wide range. At 13 weeks the focus is head control and tummy time, not rolling — mention any concerns at your 4-month checkup.
