Our methodology

How we test & rank baby gear

Every pick is scored across six axes by our editorial team, with safety weighted heaviest. Here is exactly how that works.

Safety leads every ranking

Each category uses a weighted profile that always puts safety first. High-risk gear — car seats, sleep products — makes it nearly decisive.

Living rankings

Recalls, certification changes, and shifts in owner feedback trigger a rescore. A pick can lose its spot the day a recall lands.

Independence

Brands cannot pay for placement or a higher score. We may earn a commission when you buy through our links — that never changes the ranking.

Real-world lens

We weigh hands-on use and verified owner feedback over spec sheets. A feature that looks great on paper but fails at 2 a.m. gets marked down.

The six-axis score

Weights vary by category — a car seat leans far harder on safety than a nightlight does — but safety always leads.

Safety

Heaviest

Certifications (JPMA, FMVSS 213), recall history, crash-test data where published, and materials testing. Non-negotiable for car seats and sleep products, where it nearly decides the ranking.

Ease of use

High

One-handed operation, learning curve, real-world setup time, and how forgiving the product is of installation mistakes.

Value

High

Price against the feature set and expected years of use — not just the lowest sticker price.

Durability

Medium

Stitching, joints, frame materials, and owner-reported lifespan across heavy daily use.

Comfort

Medium

Padding, ergonomics, and fit across the percentile range of children the product is rated for.

Features

Lower

Recline range, harness type, adjustability, and accessories — useful, but never a substitute for safety.

Frequently asked

Do brands pay for better rankings?

No. Placement and scores cannot be purchased. We use affiliate links and may earn a commission on purchases, but the scoring is independent of any commercial relationship — see our ethics page.

How is the score calculated?

Each product is rated on six axes — safety, ease of use, value, durability, comfort, and features. Each category applies a weighted profile that leads with safety, then sums the weighted axes into a single 0–10 score.

How often are picks updated?

Rankings are living. Beyond scheduled reviews, a recall, certification change, or meaningful shift in owner feedback triggers a rescore so a guide never recommends gear that has become unsafe.
