Week 1
In week 1, your newborn is mostly eating and sleeping, feeding 8-12 times a day and sleeping around 14-17 hours total in short stretches. It is completely normal for them to be sleepy, to lose a little birth weight in the first few days, and to seem to do little besides feed, sleep, and fill diapers. This is exactly what a healthy first week looks like.
Week 2
At 2 weeks old, your baby is feeding 8 to 12 times a day, sleeping in short stretches that add up to most of the day, and should be back to (or near) birth weight around now. Frequent feeding, fussy evenings, and lots of diapers are all normal.
Week 3
At 3 weeks old, most babies are feeding 8 to 12 times a day, sleeping 14 to 17 hours total in short stretches, and many start to seem fussier in the late afternoon and evening. This is a normal, demanding newborn phase, and your baby has likely passed their birth weight by now.
Week 4
At 4 weeks, most babies are eating more at each feed (around 3 to 4 oz, or nursing every 2 to 3 hours), sleeping 14 to 17 hours across the day and night in short stretches, and starting to be alert for slightly longer windows. Your baby is nearly one month old and likely back above birth weight.
Month 2
Week 5
At 5 weeks old, most babies are feeding 8 to 12 times a day, sleeping in short stretches around the clock, and starting to be more alert and responsive between feeds. Many are nearing their first real social smile, though there is a wide normal range for when it appears.
Week 6
At 6 weeks old, many babies hit a growth spurt, so expect a few days of extra hunger and cluster feeding. This is also when the first real social smiles often appear, and when fussiness and crying tend to peak before easing in the coming weeks. Heading toward the 2-month checkup, look for your baby briefly tracking your face and making cooing sounds.
Week 7
At 7 weeks, many babies are feeding every 2 to 3.5 hours, sleeping around 14 to 17 hours total across the day and night, and starting to give those first real social smiles. Every baby is a little different, so think in ranges, not exact dates.
Week 8
At 8 weeks, most babies are taking in more milk per feeding, may give you a longer stretch of sleep at night, and are getting noticeably more social with real smiles and cooing. This week often lines up with the 2-month well-child visit and first round of vaccines.
Month 3
Week 9
At 9 weeks, most babies take 24-32 oz of milk a day across 6-8 feeds and sleep 14-16 hours total, with one slightly longer stretch starting to appear at night.
Week 10
At 10 weeks, most babies are eating about 24 to 32 oz a day, sleeping 14 to 17 hours total, and starting to reward you with social smiles and longer stretches of alertness. Development is best understood as a range, not a weekly schedule.
Week 11
At 11 weeks (about 2.5 months), many babies are awake for longer, smiling socially, and taking bigger, less frequent feeds — usually 24-32 oz of milk a day and sleeping around 14-16 hours total, often with a longer stretch at night.
Week 12
At 12 weeks, many babies feed every 3-4 hours (about 24-32 oz of formula a day or nursing on demand), sleep around 14-16 hours total with longer night stretches, and are increasingly alert, smiley, and vocal.
Week 13
At 13 weeks, most babies take 4-6 oz per feeding about every 3-4 hours and sleep around 14-16 hours total, often with a longer stretch at night.
Month 4
Week 14
At 14 weeks, many babies are taking longer, more efficient feeds, stretching their longest sleep at night, and getting noticeably more social with smiles, coos, and steady head control. Development is best understood as a range building toward the 4-month checkup, not a fixed weekly schedule.
Week 15
At 15 weeks, most babies take in about 25-32 oz of milk a day across 5-7 feeds and sleep roughly 14-16 hours total, often with one longer stretch at night and 3-4 naps. Development is best measured against the 4-month checkup, not week by week.
