Buying guide

How to choose baby carriers

A good carrier keeps baby close and your hands free — but fit and hip-health matter most. Match the type to your body and how often you’ll wear it.

Types of baby carriers

Structured (SSC)

Buckles and padded straps spread weight well for longer wears and bigger babies.

Wrap

A long stretch of fabric you tie. Snug newborn fit; a learning curve to wrap.

Ring sling

A one-shoulder sling with rings to adjust. Fast on/off, less even weight.

Hip carrier

A seat for older babies who can sit unaided. Quick ups, not for newborns.

What to look for

  • Look for a hip-healthy (IHDI-acknowledged) seat that supports knee-to-knee.
  • Match newborn use to an insert-free or wrap option for a snug fit.
  • Try it on with weight — strap padding and back support decide comfort.
  • If two caregivers share it, prioritize quick, tool-free adjustment.

Frequently asked

Are baby carriers safe for newborns?

Yes, when baby is upright, high enough to kiss, with an open airway (chin off chest) and well-supported. Use a carrier rated for newborn weight or a proper insert.

Do carriers cause hip dysplasia?

Not if baby’s legs are in the supported "M" position (knees higher than bottom). Look for carriers acknowledged as hip-healthy by the IHDI.

Wrap or structured carrier?

Wraps give the snuggest newborn fit but take practice. Structured carriers are faster to put on and distribute weight better for longer wears and heavier babies.
